Safety For School Classrooms
Safety for school applies to all areas of the school, including the classroom. At the beginning of the school year, the teacher should set some classroom rules that dictate safety protocol for the students. Older students can help create these classroom rules, and younger students should have the reasons for the rules explained to them carefully.
School safety rules should eliminate horseplay in the classroom. Children who are goofing around could accidentally push another child into a desk or other hard surface, causing serious injury. Also, children should not run while indoors, as this can lead to falls and injury.

In a classroom with young children, electrical items, such as overhead projectors, should be off limits to the kids. Children should never be allowed to leave the classroom without permission, because teachers are responsible for knowing where their students are at all times. Emergency evacuation procedures should also be carefully discussed as part of school safety. Children need to know exactly where to go from their classroom in the event of an emergency. This process should be practiced through fire and tornado drills throughout the year.
Science classrooms pose particular safety concerns, as they contain chemicals that could be deadly. Science classroom rules should include rules about safety gear that is worn during experiments. Also, students should not be allowed to handle chemicals without instruction. In fact, as part of a school safety program science chemicals should be in a locked cabinet to keep children away from them. Students should be instructed to report any injuries, spills, or other accidents to the teacher as soon as they occur.
